What each level of cover actually pays for
Premium is only one part. What you are covered for when something happens matters more.
Comprehensive
Covers damage to your own car as well as third-party injury and property. Usually includes windscreen cover, towing and loss of use, subject to your excess.
Best for: newer or financed cars
Third-party, fire and theft
Covers third-party claims, plus loss of your car to fire or theft. Damage to your own car from an accident is not covered.
Best for: older cars still worth insuring
Third-party only
The legal minimum in Singapore. Covers injury and damage you cause to others, nothing on your own vehicle.
Best for: low-value cars near deregistration
What moves your premium
Two quotes for the same car can differ by a wide margin. These are the factors that explain most of it.
Your NCD — no-claim discount builds to 50% over five claim-free years and transfers between insurers. Do not let it lapse.
Excess and named drivers — a higher excess lowers the premium. Adding young or inexperienced drivers raises it sharply.
Workshop terms — authorised-workshop policies cost more but let you repair at the manufacturer’s workshop. Approved-workshop policies are cheaper and more restrictive.
Claims history — recent claims, even minor ones, affect pricing across insurers. We will tell you which insurers weigh it most.
Renewing with your insurer vs comparing with us
Auto-renewing
- One quote, no benchmark
- NCD and excess terms rarely reviewed
- Add-ons carried over whether you need them or not
- Workshop terms often unchanged by default
- Claims handled directly with the insurer
With Direct Cars
- Quotes across our panel, side by side
- NCD verified and transferred correctly
- Add-ons reviewed against what you actually drive
- Workshop terms explained before you commit
- Our consultants support you through a claim
Motor insurance, answered
Our consultants answer the hotline 24 hours a day if your question is not here.
Can I insure a car I have not bought yet?
Yes. Send us the details of the car you are looking at and we will quote it, so you know the running cost before committing.
Does my NCD carry over to a new insurer?
Yes. Your no-claim discount belongs to you, not the insurer. We verify it and make sure it is applied on the new policy.
What is an excess, and should I raise it?
It is the amount you pay on each claim before the insurer pays. Raising it lowers the premium, which suits confident drivers who rarely claim.
Do you help if I need to make a claim?
Yes. Call the hotline and our consultants will guide you through reporting, the workshop and the paperwork.
Can I insure a car with an expiring COE?
Yes, and third-party cover often makes more sense at that point. We will quote both so you can weigh it.
